On the occasion of the 20th anniversaries of Outset Contemporary Art Fund and Frieze London, recipients of the Outset Studiomakers Prize took over the fair’s entrance corridor. In response to its passageway, Channelling invited the visitor to experience and embody the symbolic threshold via artworks of different materialities and disciplines, including photography, video, textile, print, painting and sculpture.
Traversing this liminal space, the viewer was invited to explore a rich and vibrant network of sharing amongst speculative species, with future and imaginary bodies of suspension, adaptation and emergence. A range of approaches reflected the diversity of the Studiomakers Prize artists, and that of UK and international creatives drawn to the metropolis. The works drew from a wide range of inspiration and references: familial traditions of weaving or fabric archives, mythological, autobiographical or fictitious narratives, sociological and subjective histories, visceral, textual and gestural poetics, and playful and magical performativity.
With an immersive looping audioscape featuring the artists’ voices, their stories and artistic aspirations infused the journey towards an expansive and mutually sustainable art sector that nourishes emerging practices and dreams. Channelling was curated by Annie Jael Kwan, independent curator, in collaboration with the Outset Studiomakers Prize recipients, 2017 – present.
During Frieze 2023 Mark Corfield-Moore's work Gilded - part of the Studiomakers Corridor - was acquired by Arts Council for their inaugural Acquisitions Fund, supported by the Art Fund. Commissioned by Outset Contemporary Art Fund in collaboration with Frieze London.
