Outset Scotland supported a new commission by Luke Fowler for Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2018.
Outset Scotland’s contribution supported both production of Fowler’s new film Enceindre, and also the presentation of the film during the Festival, including a live performance by sound recordist Chris Watson.
Enceindre, filmed in Berwick and also in Pamplona in Northern Spain, played to a capacity audience during BFMAF, and was preceded by a ‘dark cinema’ version of Chris Watson’s sound recording, also made on location in Berwick and Pamplona.
For BFMAF, the opportunity to work with Fowler, and also further develop the Festival’s ‘local’ filmmaking, was an important step forward. Commissioning new work from artists able to reveal the hidden narratives and alternative histories in Berwick is a significant area of the Festival’s programme.
Reflecting on the significance of receiving this support, Fowler said:
'Receiving support from Outset was really vital in enabling me to complete the film 'Enceindre'. Having been planning the work for some time, this was a unique opportunity to realise ideas and explore the architectural and acoustic landscape of Berwick and Pamplona in a way that had previously been out of my reach.
Working with Chris Watson was also a very important development in my career, enabling me to explore new concepts and ways of working with sound in film that was nothing short of a revelation.'
Luke Fowler (b. 1978, Glasgow) is an artist, filmmaker and musician based in Glasgow. His work explores the limits and conventions of biographical and documentary filmmaking, and has often been compared to the British Free Cinema of the 1950s. Working with archival footage, photography and sound, Fowler’s filmic montages create portraits of intriguing, counter cultural figures, including Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing and English composer Cornelius Cardew.
