Outset Netherlands proudly supported Marjolijn Dijkman’s one-week exhibition and round table series at fig-2 in London. In 2000 the exhibition cycle fig-1 was conceived by Mark Francis and Jay Jopling to provide a new model for the presentation of contemporary creativity. In the tradition of fig-1, 2015's succeeding edition fig-2 lasted 50 weeks and presented a different artist each week. In collaboration with fig-2, Marjolijn Dijkman (NL, 1978) developed a week-long presentation of ideas and discussions called LUNÄ Talks: Uncertainty Scenarios.
LUNÄ Talks is based on the Lunar Society of Birmingham which was formed by a group of experimenters, tradesmen and artisans who met and made friends in the Midlands in the 1760s. Three centuries later, Dijkman revisits this moment of historical significance. She produced a replica of the table where Lunar Men met in order to provide a platform to develop and expand on the knowledge production of our times.
At fig-2 Dijkman specifically focused on the notion of the future investigating modes in which the idea of the future is seeded in our society today. She reflected on the possible consequences of current global socio-political or ecological issues and questioned her position as an artist towards these. Every day of the week, she invited a different speaker to discuss our notions of Time, recent developments in Neuroscience and explorations in Big Data, amongst others.
Marjolijn Dijkman graduated from the free media department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2001, finished a postgraduate course at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam in 2003 and was a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht for two years until 2008. In 2005 together with Maarten Vanden Eynde she initiated the organisation Enough Room for Space (ERforS). At ERforS she coordinates a research and residency programme, which sets a focus on context-driven research and the cross-pollination of different disciplines.
