Outset Netherlands is proud to have supported There’s Always Another Twist, a new audiovisual installation by Minne Kersten presented at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam. Commissioned for the historic church, the exhibition brought together film, sound, and sculpture in a site-responsive project that engages directly with the architecture, symbolism, and perceptual conditions of the space.
For There’s Always Another Twist, Kersten developed a multi-part installation centred on the Oude Kerk’s spiral staircases, which function as both a physical and cinematic motif throughout the exhibition. Using 16 mm film, Kersten created a series of moving images projected onto three circular screens, in which familiar objects—chairs, tables, staircases—gradually detach from their surroundings and appear to float through space. The choice of analogue film introduces grain, texture, and temporal delay, foregrounding the materiality of the image and emphasising moments of transition between light and darkness.
Sound plays a central role in the installation. In collaboration with sound designer Jacob Oostra, Kersten composed an audio work using field recordings from the Oude Kerk. The layered soundscape connects the films and the surrounding architecture, allowing different temporal registers of the site to coexist and be experienced simultaneously. As the natural light fades in the unlit church during the afternoon, shifts in perception become part of the work itself, with darkness functioning not as menace but as an invitation to attentiveness and alternative ways of seeing.
Through its support of There’s Always Another Twist, Outset Netherlands contributed to the production and realisation of a new commission that combines film, sound, and sculpture in close dialogue with a historic monument. The project reflects Outset’s commitment to supporting ambitious, research-driven work by artists working in the Netherlands, and to enabling institutions to commission contemporary art that engages meaningfully with architectural, historical, and perceptual contexts.
