The Outset Youth Projects at the Pinakothek der Moderne Munich ran between 2006-2009. Working alongside well-known international contemporary artists and contemporary art collections the projects gave young people the opportunity to engage in creative practices within the context of international contemporary art. The workshops were directed towards young people who, either through disability or social deprivation, have had little opportunity to visit public museums or galleries.
Artist Roman Ondák invited local children with special needs to engage with Joseph Beuys’ dictum: "Everyone is an artist". For they looked at Ondáks’s piece Passage, where the artist distributed a bar of chocolate to 500 steelworkers in Japan and asked them to make a sculpture out of the silver wrapping paper. These were then exhibited on a large table. The pupils were also actively engaged in using wrapping paper for chocolate in a three-dimensional way. The workshops concentrated on the interaction between the museum visitor and the artworks.
