In 2014 Outset Germany, thanks to the generous support of König Gallery, Berlin initiated the donation of the fountain sculpture Waterfall by Italian-born artist Tatiana Trouvé to the city of Munich.
The piece of art only reveals itself on closer inspection: a seemingly old-fashioned mattress has been thrown over a white concrete wall. It looks worn, hanging limply off the wall’s sides. This shabby look is thwarted by the bronze it is cast of, creating an alienating effect which is further enhanced by water dripping from the mattress’s buttons. The transformation of a private everyday object into a public art exhibit is idiosyncratic, dreamlike and surrealistic in a very poetic way. The fountain was initially conceived as a temporary installation for the city-wide art project A Space Called Public, curated by artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset in 2013. Thanks to Outset it has now found its permanent home in front of St. Stephan's Church.
In disquieting, entropic mis-en-scenes, Tatiana Trouvé limns the boundaries between the mental and physical where material space and form converge with immaterial time and memory. Her situations combine intricate scenographic drawings, sculptures both linear and three-dimensional, and spaces that hint at invisible dimensions. Trouvé’s 'environmental dramas' are melancholy yet highly charged, palimpsests containing echoes of other lived spaces and realities, which oscillate between the real, the imaginary and the phantasmic.
Outset has also supported a project with local students of Mittelschule am Winthirplatz, titled Living Sculptures, within the frame of A Space Called Public project.
Tatiana Trouvé (b. 1968, Cosenza, Italy) lives and works in Paris. She had solo museum exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2007); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2008); Migros Museum, Zurich (2009–10); Kunsthaus Graz, Austria (2010); and Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany. A retrospective in collaboration with the Kunstmusem Bonn and the Kunsthalle in Nürnberg, was on at the Museion Bolzano, Italy, from May to September 2014.
