Outset Netherlands was delighted to support the production of a three piece video installation for the first solo exhibition 'Today My Empire Sings' of Meiro Koizumi at the De Hallen Haarlem.
Meiro Koizumi (1976) is among the most distinctive Japanese voices in today's art. In his stirring performances and video installations, he stages psychologically charged situations that involve a subtle manipulation of the viewer's expectations. In an occasionally provocative manner Koizumi makes political and social power relationships – between the state and the individual, but also between the artist, his actors and his audience – the key focus of his work. In his most recent, controversial works that deal with the complex symbolic figure of the Japanese emperor, the artist raises questions about symbol politics, self-censorship and freedom of expression: matters that have become increasingly relevant in present-day Europe as well.
ON VIEW: 24th September 2016 – 8th January 2017
