Outset Scotland supported Urara Tsuchiya and Zoe Williams’ collaborative project, 'Châteaux Double Wide', for Glasgow International 2016.
From 8th to 25th April, Tsuchiya and Williams ran a space in the basement of Avant Garde on King Street, Glasgow, which functioned as a fluid social setting – lounge, bar, club, performance site, and exhibition space – for anyone to enjoy over the festival. The artists hosted a perpetually changing series of installations, workshops and performances during the week, and turned the venue into a bar and events space over the weekends, culminating in Tsuchiya’s finale event ‘New Angel Collection A/W 2016.’
Tsuchiya and Williams collaborated with artists including Alice Brooke, Paul Kindersley, Amy Stickland and New Noveta, as well as producers and musicians Lord Real, Vicky Steiri and the band Ectopia to develop installation, sound and performance works for the space. 'Châteaux Double Wide' probed concepts of hosting, fashion, sexuality, fantasy and role play through the creation of an intricately crafted and intimate environment.
Urara Tsuchiya (b. 1979 in Japan) lives and works in Glasgow. She works mainly with performance, video, and live events, often incorporating soft sculpture, costumes, ceramics and home cooking. These function as props to set up an alternate environment for out of the ordinary behaviours to take place. Zoe Williams (b. 1983 in Salisbury, England) lives and works in London. Her work is concerned with the creation of immersive experiences which, holding a veneer of seduction, seek to access the cerebral through sensual experience.
