In 2018, a novel, ephemeral cultural hub for contemporary artistic talent, 93 Baker Street served as the inaugural project of VO Curations, an up-and-coming nomadic curatorial project founded on the premise of re-conceptualising conventional spaces of the everyday and deconstructing their symbolism in the scope of a more versatile exhibiting process.
Located in the heart of Central London, the space pairs two galleries alongside five floors worth of former office space that have been converted into studios for selected artists, increasing its cultural valences through this drastic restructuring. Positioned around emerging art, the location is primed at presenting exciting forms of artistic expression and aesthetic exchange. The spaces are intended to be more accessible than those of a White Cube format, democratising the artwork and the artist by erasing the imposed, strict parameters of the subject and object divide present in its predecessors.
The collective studios house an accumulation of London’s most diverse contemporary art practices ranging from textile work, fine art, media, and print publishers animating the space. This eclectic selection facilitates the functioning of this collaborative community, adding to the dynamism and inclusivity that they're trying to foster. Highlights include Lagos-to-London-based magazine NATIVE, recent Central St. Martins fashion graduate Hinako Nakazawa, emerging painters Sofia Mitsola and Romana Londi, as well as countless others.
The exhibitions curated by co-founders Zina Vieille and Nnamdi Obiekwe, as well as art historian Smaranda Ciubotaru in their current project spaces have channeled this local studio talent by featuring works predominantly made on site by artists such as Morgan Ward, Richie Culver, Sonya Derviz, Alexander James, Clarissa Lim, Yanwen Xiong and Olivia Bax, Romana Londi, Sara Berman and London Frieze Week.
