While many may recognise Yoko Ono as the wife of John Lennon of the Beatles, her role as an avant-garde artist, musician and filmmaker, connected to the internationally active Fluxus movement of the sixties, is of even greater significance to the art world.
Following from a spate of exhibitions organised by important art museums and centres like SF MOMA, San Francisco; MoMA PS1; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Art, Oslo; Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle; and Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art, Vadehra Art Gallery in association with Outset India invited Yoko Ono to India in January 2012.
Wish Trees in India, Yoko Ono’s public space project supported by Outset India was inspired by Ono’s childhood experience in Japan of visiting a temple where she would write a wish on a piece of paper and attach it to a tree branch. Wish Trees in India was on display at more than 20 public spaces across Delhi and NCR.
Outset India also supported an interactive music performance by Yoko Ono, one of the earliest proponents of performance art having worked steadily with the form since the sixties.
