Outset Estonia supported the production of Kris Lemsalu’s work for the joint exhibition with Tiit Pääsuke 'Beauty and the Beast' at Tallinn Art Hall. The exhibition was curated by Tamara Luuk.
'Beauty and the Beast' was a dialogue between generations and mediums that brought together Tiit Pääsuke (b. 1941, Põltsamaa), the grand old man of Estonian painting, and Kris Lemsalu (b. 1985, Tallinn), a contemporary artist educated as a ceramicist. The basis of this exhibition was the independence and originality of these two artists and their art practice. The aim was not to exhibit them in opposition to each other, but rather bring out the connections they have – the visual intensity of colours, the recurrence of animals and women as subjects.
Kris Lemsalu (b. 1985, Tallinn) lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia. She studied at the Estonian Art Academy in Tallinn, Danmarks Designskole in Copenhagen and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Lemsalu has shown widely both in Estonia and abroad. Her recent solo exhibitions include Lord Got To Keep On Groovin’ at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery (Tallinn, 2013), Top Sinner at Pro Choice (Vienna, 2012), EVIAN DESERT at Tanja Wagner Gallery (Berlin, 2012) and Being Together (with Edith Karlson) at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery (Tallinn, 2012). Her works have been included in several group exhibitions including I’m A Painting curated by Merike Estna at KUMU Art Museum (Tallinn, 2014), is my territory curated by Monica Bonvicini at Christine König Galerie (Vienna, 2013), and Jeden Tag Gelatin at 21er Haus (Vienna, 2013).
