Outset Estonia supported the production of Paul Kuimet’s work 'Figure-Ground Study' for Momentary Monumentality, the international group exhibition of Kilometre of Sculpture 2016, curated by Anna Virtanen.
Kuimet works with photographs, space and moving images and his exhibitions often include photographs displayed as light-boxes in darkened rooms, which heightens the viewers’ relationships to both the physical and the pictorial space. His work focuses on depictions of urban environments with an interest in the dichotomies between the natural and the cultivated. Some of his recent works have dealt with the legacy of modernist art in Soviet Estonia and specific objects and structures from the Cold War period.
His photographic installation 'Figure-Ground Study' was a contribution to the overall theme of the outdoor art exhibition Kilometre of Sculpture as well as a direct continuation of a work the artist produced earlier in 2016 in Brussels. 'Figure-Ground Study' depicted a reflection of a well known Modernist building on an anonymous International Style glass facade. It consisted of two light-boxes in a completely darkened space and was developed in close discussion with the curator Anna Virtanen. The focus of the main exhibition Momentary Monumentality was monuments as manifestations of values, agendas, ideologies or histories as well as the notions of permanence and temporality.
Paul Kuimet (b. 1984) is an artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. Kuimet graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts (MA, 2014). In 2009–2010 he studied at the University of Art and design in Helsinki. He is the recipient of Sadolin Art Award (2012) and Wiiralt scholarship (2011).
